UNESCO is calling for application and nomination for the 2020 UNESCO International Literacy Prize which will award persons or groups for their outstanding projects that promote literacy within the theme “Teaching and Learning Literacy: The role of educators and changing pedagogies.

This year UNESCO will award five laureates and organizations in the International Literacy Prize. Those at the frontline of delivering literacy learning and their contribution to promoting youths and adult literacy

About UNESCO International Literacy Prize

The UNESCO International Literacy Prizes since 1967, have rewarded excellence and innovation in the field of literacy. Over 490 projects and programmes undertaken by governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world have already received recognition and support for their excellent work.

The promotion of multilingualism as an asset for both literacy and educational development in general and more particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) and its target 4.6 in terms of inclusivity quality and expanding access. Multilingual education facilitates access to education while promoting equity for populations speaking minority and/or indigenous languages, especially girls and women.

Requirement and Eligibility Criteria

Individuals, Governments, amd non-governmental organizations who are promoting literacy through effective and innovative projects or programmes.

Programmes/projects that have not been awarded the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes in the past five years.

programmes or projects who have a proven record of innovative work in the field of literacy for at least three years are eligible.

All applications should be submitted to nominating entities, such as the National Commission for UNESCO in the country of the programme, or an NGO that is in an official partnership with UNESCO.

Concerned governments of UNESCO Member States and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in official partnership with UNESCO are encouraged to take into account individuals, institutions and organizations who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of literacy and requested a nomination.

To begin with, the applicant needs to request the access to the online form through a UNESCO account, and specify in particular the submission channel (either a government or an International Non-Governmental Organization).

Once your access is granted by the Secretariat, the applicant will receive an automatic notification to the email address indicated.
candidate must have and provide a Microsoft account (@hotmail.com; @live.com; @outlook.com) to be able to access the online platform. Otherwise, you need to create your Microsoft account.

All applicant needs to complete the online form (in English or in French). attachment of any relevant supporting materials are allowed(e.g. reports, publications).

Applicant who opts for a government channel will then send the submission form with supporting materials to the appropriate National Commission (by selecting ‘YES’ under ‘Submit the application to a National Commission.

Applicant who opts to apply through an international NGO needs to obtain a nomination letter from the NGO in question that recommends them for the Prizes. This nomination letter must be attached to the submission form by the applicant.
