The World Bank Groups Global Youth Climate Network (GYCN) is delighted to launch the Climate-Smart Entrepreneurship Competition 2020

About Global Yout Climate Network

GYCN is an initiative under the Youth-to-Youth (Y2Y) Community, a network of young World Bank Group employees aiming to channel fresh ideas and perspectives into WBG operations and to engage, inspire, and empower youth in development.​​

Why GYCN Climate Smart Entrepreneurship Competition

The goal of this competition is to encourage young people to share and implement their ideas in mitigating climate change.

GYCN is an initiative under the Youth-to-Youth (Y2Y) Community, a network of young World Bank Group employees aiming to channel fresh ideas and perspectives into WBG operations and to engage, inspire, and empower youth in development. GYCN aims to encourage
climate action by the youth population around the world.

Application Deadline

The application for GYCN 2020 Climate-Smart Entrepreneurship Competition closes February 29, 2020 (midnight EST).

Value/Worth of Competition

The value of World Bank Group GYCN Global Climate Smart Entrepreneurship competition are

All paid-for round trip for one representative of each winning team to the World Bank HQ in Washington DC
Attend one-on-one discussions with World Bank Group experts and mentors
Join a network of GYCN community of climate innovators

Eligibility and Requirement for GYCN Global Climate Smart Entrepreneurship Competition

Be a team of 1-6 persons
All team members must be aged between 18 and 35 years
Innovative climate ideas designed for developing country settings.

The competition has two tracks and four thematic areas;

  • Community climate resilience and adaptation
  • Urban resilience
  • Marine pollution
  • Climate Education

Thematic Areas

  • Community climate resilience and adaptation
    What kind of innovative, cost-effective, and financially sustainable solutions can be developed to reduce the impact of local climate risks faced by communities?
  • Urban resilience
    Can you propose solutions that use innovative ideas and/or technologies to contribute to the sustainable development and climate action in an urban context? These can cover a variety of sectors, including transportation, buildings, energy, waste management, continuity of service delivery against climate shocks and bad weather conditions.
  • Marine pollution
    Do you have innovative ideas for pragmatic and cost-effective solutions to reduce marine pollution (including marine litter, urban wastewater, agricultural pollution and shipping), better monitor and track marine pollution, and/or spread the message about the severity of marine pollution through creative awareness campaigns?
  • Climate Education
    What kind of innovative, effective communication methods and/or interdisciplinary programs can be used to teach the youth about the science behind climate change and empower them to take concrete actions to combat the potential impacts?

Competition Tracks

Below are the competition tracks for the GYCN Global Climate Smart Entrepreneurship Competition

Early Design Track: projects at the concept note or early design stage
Minimum Viable Product Track: projects at later stages with a minimum viable product to showcase

Proposal Requirements

Choose ONE of the four climate thematic areas to tackle in a developing country setting
Summarize your project design
Estimate project cost, implementation timeline, and number of beneficiaries
Demonstrate the scalability of project idea to other developing country contexts
List potential local and global partnerships
Demonstrate the sustainability of your proposed financing solution

How to Apply for GYCN Global Climate Smart Entrepreneurship Competition 2020

Application Procedure

The student must apply for the World Bank Group GYCN 2020 Global Climate Smart Entrepreneurship Competition online by filling the competition form.

Deadline for Submission: Submit a complete application form before the deadline February 29, 2020.
