The United Nations Regional Courses in International Law provide high-quality training for scholars and enable qualified professionals, in particular government officials and teachers of international law from developing countries.

The United Nations Regional Courses in International Law are intended to s provide high-quality training, enable qualified professionals by prominent international law scholars and practitioners from different regions and legal systems on a broad range of core topics of international law, as well as specific topics of particular interest to the countries in a given region.

About United Nations Regional Courses in International Law For Africa

The United Nations Regional Courses in International Law are conducted under the United Nations Programme of
Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law.

Established in 1965 December 20 to provide a better knowledge of international law as a means of strengthening international peace and
security and promoting friendly relations and cooperation among States.

Degree Level of Study: Fellowship (Course)

Duration: 1 Mont at Addis Abba( from 10 February to 9 March 2021

Location: Addis Abba

Values/Awards

Successfully selected fellowship recipients will receive the following

  • Flight travel in economy class
  • Accommodation,meals, medical insurance, and
  • Training materials.
  • Fellowship recipients will also receive a modest stipend to cover other living expenses in accordance with the policies and procedures governing the administration of United
    Nations fellowships.

There will also be a limited number of spaces for self-funded participants. With the exception of training materials,
self-funded participants bear all costs associated with their participation in the Regional Course (e.g. travel,
medical insurance, accommodation and living expenses).

Candidates From Eligible countries

The Regional Course is open to candidates from the following countries: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Eligibility Criteria For 2021 United Nations Regional Courses in International Law

To be considered for the Regional Courses, candidates must have a legal background with professional experience
in the field of international law.

Candidates must also be fluent in the language in which the Course is offered (French in 2021).

The selected candidates are required to certify that they are able to attend the Regional Course in its entirety (four weeks). The Regional Course accommodates up to 30 participants.

This Regional Course is open to candidates from the States Members of the United Nations that are members of
the Group of African States.

Selection Criteria

The selection process for when selecting participants for the Regional Courses,

due consideration is given to the candidates’ qualifications,
to the scope of their professional duties, to the relevance of the training to their professional duties, and to gender
balance.

Applications from qualified female candidates are encouraged.

Due consideration is also given to those
candidates who are already present in the host city of the Regional Course (Addis Ababa).
