Let’s lay some emphasis on the referee here.

The two referees you are adding to your Chevening scholarship application form should be the ones to write you a reference letter. So take care when adding them as referee, they should be contacted and be available when the reference letter is needed.

So who should be my referee?

We advice applicants for chevening UK government scholarships to choose their referees from profession or academic section and not a relative, best you choose professors who supervised your degree projects or in your home university during your bachelor degree study and have a good knowledge of you. Don’t choose a professors most student are meeting for reference letter or one you just attended his class and don’t really know you.

You may print the chevening scholarship reference page for details on what your referee should know and the areas to write you a recomendation/reference letter, this will guide them to write you the best recommendation. let’s have a quick note on what the chevenig scholarship expectation details on your reference letter should be like.

The reference should cover:

  • How long has the referee known the applicant?
  • In what capacity do the referee know the applicant? (e.g. professional, educational, supervisory, voluntary, religious, etc…)
  • When did referee last have regular contact with the applicant?
  • A brief overall endorsement of the applicant by referee, including their:
  • Skills in leadership and networking.
  • Personal, intellectual, and interpersonal qualities.
  • Ability to complete a demanding academic program in the UK.

A further guidance information, reference letter must be written in English language. Your referee should be informed that it is important to provide as much relevant detail as possible to support the you. Once your scholarship application is progressed to the next stage of the process, you will be required by chevening to upload two reference letters. Also, take along your two reference letter to the interveiw as the British embassy or high commission in your home country may request that you bring original hard copies of your references with you.  we need to get everything exposed out for you to stand the chance to gain chevening UK government scholarship.
