The Women PeaceMakers Fellowship Program 2020/2021 will focus on “How can international peacebuilding organizations better partner with local women peacebuilders to address the closing spaces and increased insecurity women are currently facing when working to end cycles of violence?”

About Women PeaceMaker Fellowship
The Women PeaceMaker fellowship is based at the Kroc IPJ at the University of San Diego’s Kroc School of Peace Studies United State.
Knowing the power of women’s participation in peace and security decision-making, the Women PeaceMaker fellowship aims to drive forward stronger, more effective collaborations between women peacebuilders from conflict-affected communities and international partner organizations.
Also the fellowship will offers other unique opportunities for local women peacebuilders to grow their networks, and peacebuilding skills.

During the 12-month fellowship with the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ), selected Fellows will:
Learn from and with other leading Fellows and the Kroc School’s team (to see examples of past Fellows.
Gain new skills, perspectives and innovative approaches to peacebuilding.
Expand their professional peacebuilding networks.
Drive forward vital peacebuilding research that focuses on shifting practice and policy.
This four streams of work will be included by the fellowship:
- Residency
- Learning Lab Retreat
- Local Insight Sharing and Partnership Building Project
- Developing and Driving Forward Applied Research Outputs
1. Residency
Focus: Selected Fellows participate in a five-week residency at the University of San Diego’s (USD) Kroc School of Peace Studies. During this residency the Fellows, Kroc IPJ team, Kroc School, USD and San Diego community will learn from and with each other. Together this group will share ideas, strategies and knowledge on how to end cycles of violence locally and globally.
2. Learning Lab Retreat
Focus: Identified IPs and selected fellows will join the Kroc IPJ team for a 1-week retreat during the Residency to collectively build out, inform and drive forward research on this year’s areas of focus. This group will also be gathering to strengthen partnerships between the IPs and Fellows.
Selected Fellows are expected to work with the Kroc IPJ team to identify IPs with whom they will like to work collaboratively with over the next 12-months.
3 & 4. Local Insight Sharing and Partnership Building Project & Developing and Driving Forward Applied Research Outputs
Focus: Strengthening partnerships between IPs and Fellows; gathering additional data/evidence on this year’s research focus; and, developing and driving forward the applied research outputs. This will be done through:
Fellows can apply for funding to implement a Local Insight Sharing and Partnership Building Project in their local context, which will be done in partnership with IPs and the Kroc IPJ. This local project will focus on bringing together local women peacebuilders and international organizations working on this year’s focus to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships and gather insights to inform the research.
Additionally, during this time period there will be virtual work between the Kroc IPJ team, Fellows and IPs to drive forward the research initiative. At the end of this 12-month fellowship, partnerships will be strengthened and a series of research outputs will be completed.
Requirements and Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the Women PeaceMakers Fellowship must:
- Have worked for 10+ years as a peacebuilder and have worked directly in their local peacebuilding contexts;
- Demonstrates peacebuilding/peacemaking skills and attitudes;
- Be in a position to participate in all activities during the 12-month fellowship and apply what is learned at the conclusion of the residency program;
- Has worked directly with an international peacebuilding organizations on the 2020/2021 year’s focus (see above);
- Demonstrate local credibility and a strong social network within her country/community of practice;
- Speak sufficient English to relate personal experiences.
