The Foyle Young Poets Award is an opportunity awarded each year for any young person aged 11-17 to accelerate their writing career. 100 winners (85 commendations and 15 top Winners) are chosen by two high profile poets, and receive their awards at an annual prize-giving event in October.

Application for Foyle Young Poets (FYP) Award 2021 are open young individual of age 11 to 17. It is completely free to enter and you can submit as many poems as you wish. The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2021 is now open for entries and this year will be judged by the fantastic Clare Pollard and Yomi Ṣode.
About Foyle Young Poet
The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award is the biggest poetry competition for 11-17 year olds in the world. Since it began, the Award has kick-started the career of some of today’s most exciting new voices. The competition welcomes poems on any theme and any length. It is completely free to enter for anyone aged 11-17 in the world. Poems must be in English, British Sign Language or Braille.
Winners receive a fantastic range of prizes, from mentoring to a residential Arvon writing course, Poetry Society membership to books. The Poetry Society also continues to support winners’ development with performance, publication and internship opportunities.

Winners also attend a week-long intensive Arvon writing course, where they develop their creative writing skills alongside fellow poets, or benefit from poetry residencies at their school or distance-mentoring depending on their age and location.
Eligibility Criteria And Requirements
- Free to enter.
- Open to everyone aged between 11-17 on the closing date of the 31st July 2021 in order to enter.
- Poems must be written in English, but you can include phrases in your mother tongue or another language.
- If you would like to enter an entry in British Sign Language or Braille then please contact fyp@poetrysociety.org.uk
- If you are 11-12, your parent or guardian will need to give permission for you to enter. Without this permission we are not allowed to keep information about you, such as your contact details. This is because of data protection rules. Permission can be given online or by sending in the parent or guardian permission form.
- All online entries must be received by midnight BST on the 31st July 2021. Late online entries will not be accepted under any circumstances.
- All postal entries must be post-dated on or before the 31st July 2021. Late postal entries will not be accepted under any circumstances.
- Entries will NOT be accepted via email. If you would like to enter online, please continue through the online system on the website link provided (see below page)
Foyle Young Poets Rules
Pleas read the full rules below carefully
- You must be aged 11-17 on the closing date of the 31st July 2021 in order to enter.
- Individuals may enter more than one poem. However, we strongly advise that you concentrate on drafting and redrafting your poems and send only a selection of your very best. Remember, quality is more important than quantity.
- The competition is free to enter and poems can be of any length and on any theme.
- Your work is accepted on the basis that this will be its first publication anywhere in the world. This includes:
- anthologies, magazines, solo collections, school prints, school newsletters;
- online, including blogs and online magazines;
- social media such as Twitter, Facebook or Instagram;
- poems cannot have been broadcast on any regional, national or online TV station or via any radio platform.
- All 100 winning poets (top 15 and 85 commended) will be notified in September 2021 and invited to an award ceremony in October 2021 (date TBC). All winners will be required to provide a biography, photograph, permission form and proof of age.
- Poems cannot have won any other competition.
- Poems must be the original work of the author (we do run checks for plagiarism on all selected poems).
- Entries will be accepted from anywhere in the world. (Please note that we are unable to cover international travel fees for winners to attend the award ceremony but we can contribute some travel costs towards the Arvon course.)

How To Apply For Foyle Young Poets Award 2021

Application for the Foyle Young Poets Award 2021 can be carried out in any of the two methods.
Enter Online
Register a new account or log into your account and submit your poems. Please note, young poets aged 11-12 will require a parent or guardian to give permission for the young poet to enter. Without this permission we are not allowed to keep information about the young poet, such as contact details. If you are aged 11-12 please complete the parent/guardian permission form. You should upload this form once you have registered.
Entering by Post
If you would prefer to enter by post, please send your poems with your name and age on the back of your poem/s and a completed entry form. Remember to fill in the permission section on the entry form, or ask your parent or guardian to fill it in if you are aged 11-12. If you are a teacher, librarian or youth leader and would prefer to enter by post, please send a class entry form and your student’s poems with their name or unique student number and age on the back.
